In Colorado, group health insurance is designed to meet the health care needs of employees of large and small companies. In Colorado, a single person who owns a business could, in some circumstances, qualify for group health insurance benefits. If your employer offers group health plans paying only a portion of the premium, then you are responsible for the rest. This is true for individual and family coverage. Whether the employer pays all or a portion of the cost, Colorado insurance laws dictate that you cannot be refused, or asked to pay more because of your medical condition. Also, your group health insurance can never be cancelled, even if you get sick.

An important point to remember is if you leave your job, you cannot take your group plan with you. You can continue coverage by paying out of pocket for a plan called “state continuation coverage” or COBRA. This coverage usually lasts for three months. It also helps cover any waiting period you may have once you get a new job and new coverage. Keep in mind however; your new coverage may not include medication coverage for a pre-existing condition for up to one year.

Most group health plans in Colorado offer flexibility to companies in choosing plans. Companies usually offer employees several plans to choose from. A good plan will offer benefits like coverage for “out of the network” doctor visits by the members.

In cases where employees contribute to the plan, there are often times a savings plan benefit to employees. Check with your employer to see if one is offered and how it works.

By: Peter Emerson

The big debate in politics for the last 8 years or so is whether to nationalize health care. Many people feel that heath insurance and health care is a god given right and the government should take it over. The problem with that is that the government is usually a failure at whatever it does. Is the government social security system a success? No, as it will be bankrupt before I have the chance to get any of my money back. Are the government programs to help the poor a success? No, as we have just as many poor people as we ever have had. Does the government do a good job in times of tragedy? I think the victims of hurricane Katrina would answer no to that.

The only thing the government does well is to police the nation and to defend our country. Of course even that will have many people in disagreement. Why then should we ever attempt to nationalize health-care? If the government fails at almost everything it does, why on earth should we hand over the whole health care system too? The United States right now has the best health care in the world and this is evidenced by the fact that many people fly here to have their operations done. If you are in trouble health wise, the US is THE place to get the best doctors and care.

If the health care system were nationalized, finding health insurance for the self employed would no longer be a problem. That would be a good thing but what would be the quality of that care? Right now, people in Canada and Britain have to wait in line for their health care. Do you want to wait in line to see a doctor? Waiting in line is OK at the supermarket but not at a doctors office or hospital.

It is true that some people have trouble finding quality health insurance and especially self employed health insurance. It is easier to get health insurance if you work for a company that offers it. However, the system works for most of us and we do have the best health care in the world. Why would we jeopardize that? If we did nationalize it, more people might have access to it but the quality would go down. There is always a price and no system that will work for every single person.

The bottom line is that there is no perfect system where everyone will have the best health care at a price they can afford. Nothing in life works that way. America was born by people who wanted to limit the influence of government in their lives. I say, leave things the way they are. We don’t want to make them worse!

By: Bruce Alan

Misconception 1: Health insurance is unaffordable:

There are many types of plans available. The Health Savings Account (HSA), & the traditional copay type plans are the most popular. How do they compare?

The HSA plan is a high deductible health plan that covers you if there be a catastrophic health related event. It doesn’t cover the day to day incidentals like buying drugs or visiting the doctor. Therefore, these plans tend to be more affordable and the premiums are more stable from year to year. If you purchase a very high deductible plan, you will limit your financial exposure.

The copay type plan offers some advantages over the HSA plan. First, you will have a copay of typically $30 to $50 to see a doctor. This makes it easy to see a doctor without causing a large hit to the monthly budget. The fallacy is that to offer you a copay, the insurance company has to estimate how many times you will visit the doctor.

If they insure a family that sees a doctor very frequently, such as once or twice per month, the insurance company will lose money because they have to make up the difference between the amount of the copay and the actual amount of the service provided. They don’t like to lose money, so they build in a cushion. They assume that you will use your insurance frequently, and make the monthly premium high enough to cover this eventuality. Consequently, copay plans are NOT the least expensive way to insure yourself — especially if you only see a doctor only once or twice per year.

To make insurance affordable, purchase a very high deductible HSA plan. It will offer you catastrophic coverage for an affordable price.

Misconception 2: I don’t have much to lose:

You have a house, a nice new truck, a relatively new car, but you don’t have health insurance. It is just a matter of priorities. Drive older vehicles, and you can then afford health insurance. Why, you say? If I have to go the hospital, they will take care of me and they will offer me a payment plan. The fallacy here is hospital admittance. The hospitals DO NOT have to admit you unless it is an emergency. If you need a hysterectomy, don’t expect that the hospital will admit you.

Payment plans offered by hospitals and doctors may work for you, but what if you need a very expensive procedure like bypass surgery? That will cost approximately $130,000. Do you want to have to make payments monthly for the next twenty years? How can you expect to ever be financially sound with that burden to carry?

How about bankruptcy? That is not an option any longer. The courts have decided that medical payments cannot be forgiven through bankruptcy.

You do have a lot to lose. Lose your assets, incur a long term debt and perhaps be denied admittance to a health care facility.

Misconception 3: All or nothing thinking:

If you cannot afford a Cadillac, shouldn’t you buy an inexpensive Ford, Chevy or even a Yugo? Yes, you need protection from financial ruin. Consider a $10,000 deductible plan. Oh, you gasp, that isn’t very good. Where would I get $10,000? Ok, then, what is your deductible if you don’t have any health plan? It seems to me that your deductible is UNLIMITED! Just about productive person can pay off $10,000 over a period of time. However, it is much more difficult to pay off $100,000, $200,000 or more.

There is a widespread misunderstanding of insurance concept. Insurance is not supposed to cover the “little stuff” It should cover the big events that you cannot recover from. There is a 1 in 1200 chance that you will lose your house to fire or weather events. You probably have your house insured because you couldn’t afford to lose your house.

There is a 1 in 30 chance that you will be hospitalized. As you can see, the chance that you will need health insurance is much greater. Don’t be imprudent, protect yourself.

Summary:

Health Savings Account (HSA) type plans are more affordable. Purchase HSA plans instead of copay plans. If you go without a health plan, you may incur expenses that you will hinder your future. You may not gain admittance to get the health care that you need. You cannot use bankruptcy to relieve medical expenses. A high deductible plan provides a limit to your out of pocket expenses. There is almost no limit to your expenses if you don’t have a health lan in force.

By: Richard Day

The day comes that you lose your job and, along with it, you lose your health insurance. Fortunately, interim health insurance is something that can keep you afloat until you find a new job. An interim health insurance policy will cover your health care needs from the time you lose your job until you are eligible for benefits from your new employer.

Where should you begin to look for a short-term health insurance policy? Like many people today, your first stop will probably be one of the internet search engines and these will produced a laundry list of directories. These directories each provided a list of companies that offer interim health insurance and even a few that will actually tell you exactly what it is. Knowing what interim health insurance is and, just as importantly, what it is not will help you shop for the right policy and keep you from being scammed.

First of all, each state has its own brand of interim health insurance policy to help you hold onto the health insurance from your previous employer. In Minnesota it is called a Cobra Plan and covers you until you have a new job. Incidentally, state law also requires your employer to notify you of your eligibility for Cobra coverage.

Commercially available interim health insurance policies generally run from one to twelve months, although many providers limit their policies to six months, and will offer most of the same benefits that are provided on their long-term counterparts. The biggest difference you will see is that the policy is non-renewable and if you want to keep your coverage you will need to arrange a further new policy. Keep in mind that this type of policy is only intended for short-term use and not for long-term use.

Some things that will probably not be covered are wellness checks and preventative care. They will also not normally provide cover for dental or optical care. They are also very strict on denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. You can get coverage extended to cover your spouse and children. You will find also that most policies will range in price from around $25 to $100 per month.

Keeping these things in mind, you can begin to look through the results of your search. Examine the lists of companies and find one that will meet your needs. Another good place to turn for cover, because of the fee-for-service nature of the policy, is to your own home or car insurance provider as it is likely that they will also carry a health insurance policy that you can get. If you are purchasing the policy through your own insurance company, there may be an additional discount available to you for having multiple policies with them.

Your local phone book may also list a number of places for you to get interim health insurance coverage in your area. This can be an advantage if pre-approvals are needed. With a knowledge of what interim health insurance is and where you can find it, you will now be able to secure a policy that will best meet your needs.

By: Donald Saunders

As people reach their senior years the task of protecting assets and putting in place the appropriate legal, financial and health coverage can be quite confusing and somewhat daunting. As people reach their senior years the task of protecting assets and putting in place the appropriate legal, financial and health insurance coverage can be quite confusing and somewhat daunting. One of the most complicated matters that is required to be addressed is that of putting in place an appropriate senior health care insurance plan. As such it is vitally important to recognize that there are quite a number of options that should be considered when it comes to this specialized type of insurance. However, once the required information is obtained it makes the job of selecting the appropriate senior health care insurance plan a much simpler task.

The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program is one resource that you definitely should take advantage of before you choose any senior health care insurance plan. This program will ensure all your questions regarding Medicare supplements, Medicare prescription drug plans, long-term care insurance and other important matters are adequately answered. Armed with this information you will be in a much better position to decide on the best options for your particular circumstances

When you start to select a senior health care insurance plan, the first thing you need to do is to actually work out what the available options are and which ones will best suit your needs. It is strongly recommended that you make contact with providers of senior health care insurance. You can call them by phone or check out their websites or even go through the Better Business Bureau. The important questions you should address are:

* How long has each insurance company been in business?

* How reputable are they?

* What types of plans are they offering?

The next step is to obtain premium or contribution quotes. You typically do not have to pay to get quotes. This information is definitely going to be a major influence in your decision as to which senior health care insurance arrangement you take-up. There are a multitude of plans available for almost every level of health, whether your health is at a premium or if there are existing or potential health concerns. As you are no doubt aware, senior health care can be very expensive but is a much safer option than not buying insurance at all.

With the protection afforded by senior health care insurance you are effectively capping the cost of any medical treatment you may require in the future and by doing so you are also ensuring that you, or your supporting family, will not experience any serious financial trouble in funding any urgent or costly long term medical attention.

The most important aspect of organizing comprehensive and effective senior health care insurance is that you can rest assured that should you become seriously ill then you will be afforded the very best of medical attention, notwithstanding the massive expense this involves. So if you or your parents are approaching the time to obtain senior health care insurance then please remember you must investigate all options available to you so that you are adequately protected well into the future.

By: Madonna Jeffries

Health insurance is very important to most people. The reason for this is that the cost of seeing a doctor or having medical treatments of any type is at an all time high. Without health insurance a lot of people simply cannot afford to go to the doctor. While health insurance rates aren’t necessarily all that great, they are more affordable in the long run than paying for medical care without health insurance.

Most people will find that the most affordable way to get insurance is through their employer. The reason for this is that when you get insurance through your employer you are a part of a group plan. A group plan is appealing because you are given a discount for being a part of the group. In addition, many employers actually will pay for a portion of the insurance coverage. The result is that the health insurance is much more affordable when you get it through your employer group insurance plan.

Unfortunately, not everyone works for an employer who provides insurance so they are on their own to get coverage. If have found yourself looking for health insurance the best thing you can do is shop around. When you shop around through different companies you will be able to get health insurance quotes. Don’t just look at the price; look at what you get for the price. When you look at the details you will soon see that there is a big difference in what each provider can offer you for a price.

When shopping for your insurance you do need to look at how much it will cost you every month, but then look a bit deeper. See what your co-pays are to see your primary care doctors and how much it is to see a specialist. Look at how many doctor’s visits you get per year, and how much you would have to pay if you went to the emergency room. Generally insurance companies will pay 50, 60, 70, or 80% of your hospital bills. Look at this closely, especially if you are someone who has to go to the doctor or hospital a lot. When looking over this information you’ll find that there are some big differences between each insurance company and what they can offer you.

Before you select your insurance company you should also be looking at your pharmacy coverage. Will the insurance help you pay for your medications? How much will you have to pay for those that aren’t covered? When you start adding up these costs you’ll soon find which health insurance quote is truly the most affordable and the best fit for you.

By: Caitlina Fuller

Politicians are struggling to spin health insurance as one of their platforms. The news media networks, MSN, FOX News all play it up or down, depending on their point of view. While there are many ideas about health care, the fact remains that the struggle for affordable health care in America real, and it is getting worse every year.

One of the biggest myths about health care is that most of those without insurance are illegal immigrants, or are unemployed. This simply isn’t true.

The National Health Care Coalition has found that nearly eighty per cent of the uninsured in America are citizens, and eighty per cent of those come from working class families. During 2006, over 90 percent of the population or nearly five million people, were without any kind of health insurance for at least part of the year. Now that the unemployment figures are higher, that number is also larger.

America is a world leader. Why is nothing being done to guarantee health care to our working families? If you are working just to get by, then you usually make too much to qualify for Medicaid. Staying at home and drawing welfare so that you can have health insurance doesn’t make any sense to most people, and budget problems at the state level is making that harder as well.

Young adults to the age of twenty-four probably don’t give health care a second thought. They are the population group that is most likely to be without a health plan. There are families that earn over $50,000 per year and also don’t have insurance, even when it is offered by their employer, because they just cannot afford the premiums. If a family earning that kind of money cannot afford health insurance, how can a family who earning half of that be expect to pay for a health plan?

The trouble is that being uninsured means that serious illnesses may go undiagnosed or untreated. Even something like the flu can cause complications and even death if left untreated.

Someone without health insurance is more likely to end up hospitalized for an avoidable condition. The cost of that stay will be around $3000. If that person had been seen a doctor, the condition could have been caught and treated before it became a problem. Hospitals treat patients without insurance and it costs nearly $34million dollars every year. That cost is added back to the paying public through higher hospital bills. This increases insurance rates forces more people to go without.

Affordable health insurance in America needs to be talked about not only during election years. We all need to focus on it and fix it now, realistically and fairly. Health insurance should not be a luxury, or an option for a select few. It should be affordable for all.

By: Karen Enden

Insurance is the present day need of the modern society. Employer-sponsored health insurance is one amongst the insurance schemes in which the employees’ are benefited. It ensures that the employee’s health is protected and the employee avails a sustainable growth. A common reason why the scheme is being offered is on a general concern of the employees’ and their families’ health and welfare, employee productivity, retention and recruitment. On an average, the average cost of insurance that an employee avails is three thousand dollars a year.

Any small business, defined as 2 to 50 employees, must be offered the similar health insurance for small businesses that is offered to all other small businesses. It is impossible to deny coverage to any concern which pays their premium, doing business for at least two months, offering the coverage to all its employees including the part-time workers. It is also the responsibility of the insurance company to inform the minimal number of employees allowed for a plan, so that they have the right to withdraw the amount. The insurance maybe cancelled if the minimal number of employees did not participate.

Any employee avails insurance based on his average age and location. The employer sponsored plans were forced to increase their premiums to keep up with these increasing costs, and there was only so much of it that could be passed on to the employee. The benefit the health insurance expected is closely related with the status of the employee. The unions in companies mandated that health insurance should be provided, while there was no demand from non union companies. This lead to a bad speculation about those companies among the employees. So, employers were forced to offer this as they had to struggle for the best employees. Plans have also been proposed by politicians that would make employers mandatory to offer insurance plans for their employees or to contribute to national plan on a whole that would be modeled after Medicare without any age limitations.

A recent survey found that nearly half of the small business employers in California don’t provide health insurance for their employees. Adding to this, according to a study released by the University of California-Los Angeles, Center for Health Policy Research, there is a decline in the employer-sponsored health insurance coverage scheme from 56.4% in 2001 to 54.3% in 2005,Los Angeles Times dated 11/07/07.The report also stated that 80% of the uninsured employees either work for employers who did not offer them the health insurance scheme, or were not entitled to receive the health benefits. Even more drastic was 20% did not even enroll them in the available insurance plans.

The study also further reported the increase in the premium family coverage by 66% through employer-sponsored plans from 2001 to 2005.Although there was a significant amount of residents availing the benefit of employer-based coverage proportion of Californians who have not insured declined from 21.9% in 2001 to 20% in 2005. The study features the decline to enrollment increases in medicals, the state’s Medicaid program; Healthy-Families; and county-based insurance programs. According to Times, about one in three California children are insured through such programs. The report also stated that 63% of uninsured Californians were U.S. citizens, 15% non citizens having green cards and 22%of the states’ uninsured residents were undocumented immigrants.

Also on the same day the Center on Policy Initiatives released a report stating that about 8.7 million of California’s 17.3 million adult workers do not have employer-based health insurance and 2.9 million do not have any insurance. According to the study, people with high wages were more likely to have the health coverage than the employees with low wages. As a major requirement, Health insurance for employees makes financial sense, as well as motivates employees, keeps them happy and reduces absenteeism.

Employer-sponsored health insurance is in crisis, only informed people shall be benefiting themselves and bring benefit to the country. It is high time all these setbacks are dealt with the perfect plan and strategy.

By: Sam Rosy

It is highly likely that you are completely overwhelmed by the vast amount of information regarding health policy. Advice is what you need to bypass all the data that is not applicable to you. What you need to know are the main health insurance plans and also which are the cheapest. In order to save you time and money you need a one stop website that will provide you with all the information you need. There are many sites on the Internet with complicated information. Make sure you use a site that is easy to use and easy to understand.

Health insurance advice should simplify the process for you. What you want is an easy online application process that allows you to receive quotes and put you in touch with insurance companies in your own area. You also want to read up on relevant information about the health plans currently in use. You want to match the plan that is best suited to your needs. Every client has different requirements. A single individual has different needs to a couple. Families with growing children need to take into account all the different illnesses and unexpected scrapes, bruises and broken bones that are normal to childhood.

Getting health insurance advice in order to get the right policy and plan is essential. If you get a plan that is not right for your needs you could end up not having enough cover. On the other hand, you could also be left with extra cover that is expensive but you don’t need. Health insurance cover must be balanced with your lifestyle and requirements. For example, a family needs the assurance that all childhood illnesses like mumps and measles are covered. Adults need to know that afflictions such as heart disease and diabetes are covered.

By: Andy J. Hughes
